Towering peaks, 10,000' passes and glowing golden splendor are the targets for the first four days of this tour through southwestern Colorado. The San Juan Skyway covers only 236 miles, but it is some of the best country the Rockies have to offer. We will cross five 10,000 passes, passing an array of 14,000' peaks, through the heart of 5 million acres of the San Juan, Uncompahgre and Rio Grande National Forests. Expansive stands of aspens throughout these national forests should be at different stages of their astonishing fall change to brilliant gold, where entire mountainsides take on their dazzling glow. Deer and elk, and more recently, moose and bighorn, are often-seen inhabitants of the area this time of year. The numerous mountain lakes and streams, along with historic western towns, will provide a bountiful supply of assorted subjects. Much of the weekend will be spent at the Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve, home to the largest sand dunes in North America. The imposing dunes, more than four miles square and 700' high, offer the promise of exciting abstracts to go along with the vast scenics and intimate landscapes of the massive sands. There is no classroom session in this tour - all work and instruction will be in the field, over the camera.
